Focused ultrasound of deep-brain structures as an intervention for schizophrenia
Description
Current pharmaceutical interventions for schizophrenia have some effect on positive symptoms (e.g., reducing hallucinations), but limited impact on negative symptoms. Current techniques of non-invasive brain stimulation, on the other hand, had small and inconsistent benefits. However, such neuromodulation techniques (TMS, TCS) were only able affect superficial structures of the brain. With focused ultrasound, we are able to directly target deep-brain structures that are known to be involved in schizophrenia.
This project aims to stimulation deep-brain structures in patients and to measure the impact of stimulations on symptoms scores in order to compare effects with the effects of drug-only interventions.
