Development of a complex feeding intervention to reduce stress and anxiety in parents with multiple births

FRates of multiple births are rising worldwide. Caring for multiples is challenging; preterm birth and low birthweight are common requiring complex feeding interventions often involving schedules which vie with mothers’ instincts. Parents with multiple births experience more depression, anxiety, and parenting stress compared to singletons. There is insufficient evidence that education and support can help breastfeed multiples; however, anticipatory guidance about responsive feeding can improve outcomes. This PhD will ascertain the nature and type of feeding support that parents need using the MRC framework. This will inform an intervention to reduce parental stress and anxiety and improve infant health and psychological outcomes.
