Improving dementia communication skills in care homes
Description
There is little high-quality research on the communication skills care home practitioners use when caring for residents with dementia. This study will collect video-recorded data of naturally occurring conversations between care home practitioners and residents with dementia, then using conversation analysis unpack the effective communication skills used by the care home practitioners. These findings will be condensed into ‘teachables’ and used to develop a communication skills teaching and learning resource for care home practitioners. The research will build on the NIHR-funded VOICE programme which has identified dementia communication skills and developed training courses for healthcare practitioners in the acute hospital.
