A salutogenic approach to Childhood Trauma and Mental health
Aim: To develop an understanding of the coping resources that enable people who have experienced childhood trauma to stay mentally healthy into adulthood, and the services and resources needed to support them.
Developing an understanding of coping resources will point to where services and resources might best be placed to reduce the long-term harms of childhood trauma. Using a salutogenic approach takes the burden away from the individual towards more collective responsibility for trauma reduction. This project will bring together evidence from the literature with people’s experiences to identify coping resources, and then seek input from survivors and a multidisciplinary group of professionals to explore not only which services and resources are needed, but also when they are of most use.
