Inflammation and Psychosis: the cortical and cellular effects of IL6 inhibition

This PhD project will be supported by the Psychosis Immune Mechanism Stratified Medicine Program (PIMS) MRC funded study. Low-grade activation of the innate immune system is of increasing interest as a non-dopamine mechanism of pathogenesis in schizophrenia and PIMS investigates the IL-6/IL-6R pathway. The PIMS experimental medicine study will test the effect of a single dose of the anti-IL-6 receptor antibody (tocilizumab) over the month of ensuing immune suppression. The PhD student will focus on the effects of IL6 inhibition on resting state fMRI, cognition and related clinical measures and examine evidence of target engagement on subsets of white cells.
