Midlands MHN DTP & Sustainable Hydrogen CDT 2025 Writing Retreat

Earlier this week, second and third-year MHN DTP fellows came together with final year fellows from the Sustainable Hydrogen CDT for a three-day residential writing retreat at the tranquil Delta Breadsall Priory Country Club. Nestled in the Derbyshire countryside, the venue provided the perfect backdrop for focused writing, reflective discussion, and meaningful peer connection.

The retreat was designed to offer a dedicated space for fellows to engage deeply with their research projects away from the usual pressures of academic life. Across the three days, participants had the opportunity to set writing goals, engage in informal peer discussions, and share progress in a supportive and collegial environment.

One participant summed up the value of the retreat perfectly, saying:

“Being able to see peers and have a chance to share where we are all at with our research in an informal setting, as well as space to process ideas and write, has been invaluable!”

Moments of connection extended beyond the writing rooms, with fellows enjoying meals together, nature walks around the grounds, and quiet moments to recharge. These informal interactions were just as impactful as the structured writing sessions, helping to strengthen the sense of academic community.

A highlight of the retreat was the group photo, capturing all attendees alongside the two programme managers who helped facilitate the experience. The image reflects not just a cohort of researchers, but a network of mutual support and shared ambition.

We’re already looking forward to the next opportunity to gather, write, and grow together.
