Insecure work and risks to the mental health of pregnant women

Description

Insecure work (e.g. zero hours; temporary; irregular work) is associated with poor health (Pulford et al. 2022), with emerging evidence linking insecure employment in pregnancy with mental ill-health (Pearson et al 2018, Maternity Action 2020). Anxiety, depression stress and fear of disclosure and its consequences are highlighted risks. This study will explore in more depth the links between insecure work and perinatal mental health. It will focus on the scale and nature of the problem, how it is experienced and how midwives and other health professionals can support the wellbeing of women living in difficult employment circumstances throughout the perinatal period.
